Chemistry/Biochemistry/Pre-Pharmacy Programs

CHEMISTRY

The Department of Biological and Physical Sciences offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry as well as a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry with a concentration in Biochemistry. Students wishing to study pharmacy also major in one of these tracks.

Our degree programs prepare students to work as chemists/biochemists, enter graduate school, attend pharmacy or other professional schools, and more. We have recent graduates working at Dupont, Waters Agricultural Laboratories, Renner Wood Coatings, and county Soil & Water Conservation offices. Our graduates are also attending Master of Science and Ph.D. programs at NC State University, University of Nottingham (UK), UNC Charlotte, and Pharm.D. programs at Campbell University, Colorado University, and Notre Dame of Maryland University.

Students have the opportunity to engage in faculty-mentored research for a unique one-on-one learning experience that often culminates in presenting at regional or national conferences. Our students receive individual attention and access to faculty and instrumentation that is nearly impossible to find at larger universities. Some recent student posters are listed below (undergraduates are underlined):

Kaylee Wells, Megan L. Pajski, and Jason J. Pajski, Electrochemical characterization of hexakis(urea)chromium(III) chloride and cis-dichlorobis(ethylenediamine)chromium(III) chloride.
Southeastern Regional Meeting of the American Chemical Society, Columbia, SC; 10/2016.

Ryan T. Fallows and Jason J. Pajski, Comparison of several computational methods for amine-imine tautomer prediction in biofilm inhibitors.
Southeastern Regional Meeting of the American Chemical Society, Columbia, SC; 10/2016.

Featured among our course offerings are many courses with intensive laboratories that utilize our equipment laboratory complete with FT-IR, UV-Vis, HPLC, GC-MS, Real-time PCR, FAAS, NMR, WaveNow potentiostat, and more.  For more information, see our list of instrumentation.
