MOUNT OLIVE – Topsail resident Kaylynd Garner completed her bachelor of arts degree in marketing from the University of Mount Olive (UMO) in April. She transferred to UMO in 2021 after earning her associate in arts from Cape Fear Community College.

Encouraged by her mother, a former UMO student, Garner found the University to be the ideal place to further her education and pursue her dreams. “My previous college experience was all online and I thrived,” Garner shared. “That is the major reason why I chose to study at UMO. I was able to express myself better in an online setting and create a schedule that allowed me to grow my business.”

Garner’s path was marked by significant achievements, including completing a marketing internship during her freshman year and starting her own business, Kay Design Co. Her passion for website design, digital art, and advertising has driven her career ambitions, and she credits her educational experience at UMO for providing the support needed to achieve her goals.

Reflecting on her journey, Garner acknowledged the challenges she faced and the support she received. “There were moments where I doubted if I could make it to this point in my life. However, I put my faith and trust in God and worked daily towards my goals. I’m thankful every day for my family, advisors, and friends who rooted for me and helped me get here.”

Garner is recognized, by those that know her, as someone with great determination and resilience. Described by close family and friends as a goal-setter and achiever, Garner admits, “I can be a perfectionist. I don’t give up easily and I am good at overcoming adversity.” She draws inspiration from her father, who, despite having many children at a young age, successfully graduated from medical school.

With her degree in hand, Garner is poised to expand her marketing agency, where she designs custom websites and manages social media accounts for businesses. She also engages in commission painting, with proceeds going to charity through her initiative at www.purityingold.com. Garner’s future is bright as she continues to apply the lessons learned at UMO to her growing business and personal life.

“UMO has prepared me by teaching me that if I work hard on my goals every day, I will achieve them,” she said. “Juggling work, home, and school life taught me a lot about determination. Now, I am very thankful to have the time to put more energy into my business and be more present with my family and friends.”

Garner advises prospective students to embrace the flexibility of college education. “Set your mind to it and you can achieve anything. The amazing thing is you can set your own pace and take as many classes as you like. If you’re hesitant to start, you can begin with one class and do more later on.”
