Writing Center

Our Mission

The University of Mount Olive Writing Center works with students in collaborative coaching sessions where dialogue, practice, and discovery uphold the institution’s virtues. We support faculty and staff development by providing opportunities in and out of the classroom for instructors to explore effective practices for helping students become better writers.

Your Session with a Writing Coach

Our carefully selected and well-trained peer Writing Coaches, along with trained faculty Writing Coaches, can help UMO students at any stage of their writing process. Have too many ideas to focus your topic? Struggling to organize your paper effectively? Need assistance with citations? We can help with all of that – AND MORE!

Your session with a Writing Coach will typically take about 45 minutes. To make the most of your time, bring a copy of your assignment description along with any notes, outlines, drafts, or other materials that could help make your session as successful as possible. Laptops are quite useful, but feel free to bring hard copies if you’re more comfortable.

You can book an appointment for an in-person session at the Center or a virtual session over Zoom. Not feeling especially organized today? Just drop by and see us in Henderson 121. We’ve got a cup of tea with your name on it! (Fair warning, though: Students with appointments take precedence over drop-ins.)

Writing Center Operating Hours

A Writing Coach is available in the Center Monday-Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. Zoom sessions can be scheduled for those times, and we have some on-request Zoom times available on Friday or Saturday. Zoom appointments need to be booked at least 24 hours in advance so we can arrange for a Coach to work with you. No appointments can be booked for Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. until noon in honor of Chapel services.
