Bachelor of Science in Nursing (Prelicensure BSN)

The University of Mount Olive offers the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (Prelicensure BSN) in both a daytime and evening/weekend/summer format.  Now more than ever, the nursing profession needs qualified, caring, and professional nurses.  Our program prepares you with the general education, fundamental skills, and professional and evidence-based practice necessary for a successful and meaningful career.  Upon graduation, you can sit for the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) to become a Registered Nurse and begin your professional nursing career. If you are not already a Registered Nurse, this program affords you a great opportunity to become a BSN-prepared RN.

60 sh of general education will be completed before you are accepted into the Prelicensure BSN degree program (freshmen and sophomore years)

Our daytime track is collegiate athlete-friendly allowing daytime students to play sports and become a BSN prepared nurse

Daytime track accommodates 50 residential or commuter students who complete their didactic and clinical courses during the weekdays, allowing for a summer break

“Fast-track” accommodates 50 commuter students who complete their didactic courses in the evenings and their clinicals on the weekends, including the summer

60 sh of core nursing major courses are offered during the junior and senior years

Complete clinicals in a variety of patient care settings

Program Details

The University of Mount Olive offers the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (Prelicensure BSN) in both a daytime format for residential or commuter students, as well as a “fast-track” format that runs in the evenings, weekends, and all summer for commuter students.  The daytime format is collegiate-athlete friendly!  This allows students to pick the format that best suits their personal and professional needs. Students will experience a state-of-the-art simulated clinical experience for adults, labor and delivery, and pediatrics.  Our $1 million Nursing Simulation Laboratory features the brand new SimMan 3G PLUS. UMO is second organization in the world to offer this simulation!

The Prelicensure BSN degree program is overseen by the North Carolina Board of Nursing (NCBON).

All our Prelicensure BSN students complete 600 hours of clinicals in a variety of patient care settings, including their 120-hour senior year preceptorship prior to graduation.

Important Dates:

*This program has a Fall Semester start only

  • August 1 – Application opens for the next year’s cohort
  • January 15 – Last day to submit application and required documents
  • March 1 – Decisions released to candidates
  • April 1 – Last day for accepted candidates to secure their spot in the program

Admissions Requirements:

Candidates must meet the following requirements in order to be eligible for review by the Nursing committee. See Admissions for additional details.

  • Submit free application
  • Submit transcripts from all institutions attended
  • Complete specific course prerequisites and meet minimum GPA requirements
  • Pass the Kaplan Nursing Entrance Exam with a score of 50% or higher
  • Have a minimum of 24 contact hours of patient care experience, detailed in a resume to be collected with the application
  • Type a 250-500 word personal statement to be collected with the application that details the following: 1) Why are you considering UMO?; 2) Why do you want to be a Nurse?; and 3) What does Nursing mean to you?

Other Program Requirements:

  • Candidate must provide proof of US citizenship or proof of: US permanent resident status, Green Card, H-18 Visa, or undocumented with SSN
  • Candidate cannot have any academic integrity violations
  • Candidate must have a clear criminal background check
  • Candidate must have a clear drug screen
  • Candidate must have all immunizations up-to-date as defined by the University and Prelicensure BSN degree program policies

Confirmation Despoist:  In order to secure your spot in the nursing program, a confirmation deposit of $500 will be required upon acceptance.
