UMO Students Recognized at Annual Awards Night
Catawba County Student Receives Award at UMO
Isaac Lidke of Newton was recognized for his achievements at the University of Mount Olive’s Annual Awards Ceremony. He received the Agribusiness Student of the Year award. Lidke is a senior agribusiness major.
The award is given to an outstanding agribusiness senior having a minimum of 92 semester hours and a GPA of 3.0 or better with resume capturing leadership qualities, community contributions, and other interests.

Chatham County Student Receives Award at UMO
Ashley Fabela of Siler City was recognized for her achievements at the University of Mount Olive’s Annual Awards Ceremony. She received the MBA Student of the Year Award. Fabela is a senior business administration major.
The MBA Student of the Year honor is awarded to an MBA scholar who completed all course requirements with the University of Mount Olive and earned the highest grade-point average among all UMO: MBA students who met the graduation criteria during the prior calendar year (i.e., prior three graduations: fall, summer, and spring).
Craven County Students Receive Awards at UMO
Two Craven County students were recognized for their achievements at the University of Mount Olive’s Annual Awards Ceremony. Among those receiving awards were:
William Ebron of New Bern received The Free Will Baptist Ministerial Award. Ebron is a junior christian studies major. The scholarship is given by the North Carolina Ministerial Association of Original Free Will Baptist to an outstanding returning Free Will Baptist student who has demonstrated potential for excellence in the Christian ministry.
Amber McCarthy of New Bern received the Healthcare Management Student of the Year. McCarthy is a senior business administration: healthcare management major. This award is given to an outstanding healthcare management senior having a minimum of 92 semester hours and a GPA of 3.0 or better with a resume capturing leadership qualities, community contributions, and other interests.
Cumberland County Student Receives Award at University of Mount Olive
Katrina Powell of Stedman was recognized for her achievements at the University of Mount Olive’s Annual Awards Ceremony. She received the BBA Student of the Year Award. Powell is a business administration major.
The award is given to an outstanding business management senior having a minimum of 92 semester hours and a GPA of 3.0 or better with a resume capturing leadership qualities, community contributions, and other interests.
International Students Receive Awards at UMO
Several international students were recognized for their achievements at the University of Mount Olive’s Annual Awards Ceremony. Among those receiving awards were:
Andres Herrera of Escazu, Costa Rica received the Computer/Management Information Systems Student of the Year. Herrera is a senior business administration: computer information systems major. The award is given to an outstanding computer/management information systems senior having a minimum of 92 semester hours and a GPA of 3.0 or better. The student must demonstrate a resume capturing leadership qualities, community contributions, and other interests.
Axel Engren of Sundsvall, Sweden received the Finance Student of the Year. Engren is a junior business administration: finance major. The award is given to an outstanding finance senior having a minimum of 92 semester hours and a GPA of 3.0 or better with a resume capturing leadership qualities, community contributions, and other interests.
Oliver Winterhagen of Mannheim, Germany received the Business Management Student of the Year. Winterhagen is a junior business administration: business management major. The award is given to an outstanding business management senior having a minimum of 92 semester hours and a GPA of 3.0 or better with a resume capturing leadership qualities, community contributions, and other interests.
Violette Daudin of Menestreau En Villette, France received the Most Promising Exercise and Sport Science Underclassman. Daudin is a sophomore exercise and sport science major. The award is given to a sophomore or first-year ESS major who demonstrates outstanding scholarship and service/leadership capabilities. The award is presented to a student recipient having completed at least 30 semester hours at the University of Mount Olive, and at least 12 semester hours of ESS course work, and having a cumulative GPA of 2.7 or better and a 3.0 GPA or better on all ESS course work; community activities related to the ESS profession; and membership in college, civic clubs, or other organizations.
Kody Baker of Gayndah, Australia received the Sophia H. Potts English Award. Baker is an RLS exercise science major. The Sophia H. Potts English Award is a $1,000 scholarship established in 1983 by Dr. James Alton Cowan in memory of his teacher Sophia H. Potts (1908-1982), who taught English and speech at Mount Olive College from 1956-1959. Each year composition faculty nominate students from ENG 111 and ENG 112 classes for the award. Those entries are read, discussed, and a winning essay is identified.
Johnston County Students Receive Awards at the University of Mount Olive
Two Johnston County students were recognized for their achievements at the University of Mount Olive’s Annual Awards Ceremony. Among those receiving awards were:
Deborah Stephenson of Smithfield received the BSN Student Nurse Community Service Award. Stephenson is a junior nursing: pre-licensure major. The award is given to a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) student who exhibits exceptional commitment to community health. The award acknowledges a dedicated nursing student who actively employs their burgeoning knowledge and skills to advance health and well-being within the community and serve as a pillar of leadership and advocacy.
Grayson Morgan of Princeton received the Marketing Student of the Year. Morgan is a senior business administration: marketing major. The award is given to an outstanding marketing senior having a minimum of 92 semester hours and a GPA of 3.0 or better with a resume capturing leadership qualities, community contributions, and other interests.
Duplin and Lenoir County Students Receive Awards at the University of Mount Olive
Two Duplin and Lenoir county students were recognized for their achievements at the University of Mount Olive’s Annual Awards Ceremony.
Mariana Crespo of Pink Hill received the Senior Citizen Cup. Crespo is a senior justice studies major. The Senior Citizenship Cup is presented by the Student Affairs Office to the graduating senior who has evidenced the most outstanding qualities of citizenship during his/her academic career at the University of Mount Olive.
Crespo also received the Justice Studies Outstanding Student Award. This award is presented to the highest-performing Justice Studies and Sociology senior in a traditional graduating class. The candidate must demonstrate outstanding scholarship, classroom leadership, collegiality, and adherence to the University Covenant. The award recipient must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher and will have demonstrated superior analytical and communication skills, and mastery of the discipline through the presentation of a senior research project, and participation in research symposiums or professional conferences. In addition, the Justice Studies Student of the Year must show a genuine interest in contributing to the discipline and promise of either securing a career in the field of Justice Studies or being accepted to a graduate studies program.
The Justice Studies Student Leadership Award was also presented to Crespo. This award recognizes the contributions of students who stand out as leaders in the classroom and in the community during their tenure at UMO. The Outstanding Leadership Award is presented to a student who has exhibited the ability to overcome adversity, stand out as a leader among colleagues in the classroom and student community, and uphold the tenets of the University covenant. This is a student nominated award on recommendation by the Justice Studies Student Advisory Council. The award recipient must be a Justice Studies student with a GPA of 3.3 or higher who demonstrates leadership, collegiality, and adherence to the University covenant.
Haley Dunn of Pink Hill received the Louise Edgerton Teacher Education Student of the Year. Dunn is a senior Elementary Education (K-6) major. This award is sponsored through the generosity of the late Dr. Thomas R. Morris in memory of his cousin, Louise Edgerton, to honor her 18 years of service as a trustee to the University and her 40 years as a public school teacher. The award is presented to a senior education major demonstrating academic excellence and showing promise as a prospective educator. The award recipient is selected by the Division of Education faculty.
Moore County Student Receives Award at the University of Mount Olive
John “Cooper” McCrimmon of Southern Pines was recognized for his achievements at the University of Mount Olive’s Annual Awards Ceremony. He received the President’s Citizenship Award. McCrimmon is a junior ag production systems major.
The President’s Citizenship Award, first awarded in 1972, is a scholarship presented to a returning student who has made the greatest contribution to the University during the academic year. The scholarship is payable on future educational expenses at the University of Mount Olive.
Onslow County Students Receive Awards at the University of Mount Olive
Two Onslow County students were recognized for their achievements at the University of Mount Olive’s Annual Awards Ceremony. Among those receiving awards were:
Jody Horne of Richlands received the W. Burkette Raper Religion Student of the Year. Horne is a junior Christian studies major. The award is given to an outstanding graduating ministerial student on the basis of academic excellence and evidence of commitment to the Christian ministry. This award is given to honor the memory of Dr. W. Burkette Raper for his lifelong commitment to the University of Mount Olive. Selection criteria include 3.5 GPA or better, academic excellence, professional service, and personal growth.
Dustin Kureska of Richlands received the Human Resource Management Student of the Year. Kureska is a senior business administration: human resource management major. The award is given to an outstanding human resources management senior having a minimum of 92 semester hours and a GPA of 3.0 or better with a resume capturing leadership qualities, community contributions, and other interests.
Out-of-State Students Receive Awards at the University of Mount Olive

Carly Curcio of Hackettstown, New Jersey received the Accounting Student of the Year. Curcio is a senior business administration: business management major. This award is given to an outstanding accounting senior having a minimum of 92 semester hours and a GPA of 3.0 or better with a resume capturing leadership qualities, community contributions, and other interests.
Hayden Frear of Colorado Springs, Colorado received the Outstanding Computer Science Major. Frear is a senior computer science major. This award is given to an upper-class student who has excelled in computer science as determined by the computer science faculty.
Amanda McLeod of Baltimore, Maryland received the Outstanding Mathematics Major. McLeod is a senior mathematics major. The award is given to an upper-class student who has excelled in mathematics as determined by the mathematics faculty.
Nicholas Richardson of York, Pennsylvania received the Lorelle F. Martin Science Award. Richardson is a junior biomedical science and biochemistry major. This award is a scholarship given by the University of Mount Olive in honor and memory of Lorelle F. Martin, professor emerita, who taught science at Mount Olive College from 1957-1987. The award is given to an outstanding returning science major who has demonstrated excellence in the biological sciences, and is selected by the Department of Biological and Physical Sciences.
Hailey Morgan of Corsicana, Texas received the Award for Excellence in Science. Morgan is a sophomore biomedical science major. This award is given to an outstanding returning science major who has demonstrated excellence in the physical sciences and is selected by the Department of Physical & Mathematical Sciences.
Nicole Lorenz of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania received the Agriculture Student of the Year. Lorenz is a senior agriculture production systems/agriculture animal science/plant science major. This award is given to a student with a minimum GPA of 3.0. The recipient exemplifies academic performance and leadership qualities both in and out of the classroom and must be active in agricultural events and campus organizations. This student is selected by the faculty from the School of Agriculture and Biological Sciences and presented with a cash award.
Danielle Trimbur of Boyertown, Pennsylvania received the Agricultural Education Student of the Year. Trimbur is a senior agriculture education major. This award is presented to an outstanding agricultural education student having completed 60 semester hours and having demonstrated academic excellence, professional service, commitment to community, and personal growth as determined by the Agricultural Education faculty and staff. This student receives a cash award that is sponsored by Southern Bank.
Pamlico County Student Receives Award at the University of Mount Olive
Olivia Reardon of Bayboro was recognized for her achievements at the University of Mount Olive’s Annual Awards Ceremony. She received the Outstanding Exercise and Sport Science Major award. Reardon is a senior exercise and sports science major.
The award is given to an outstanding ESS senior who has demonstrated scholarship and service/leadership capabilities. The award is presented to a student recipient having completed at least 92 semester hours (30 of which must be from UMO), and 48 semester hours of ESS course work at the University of Mount Olive, and having a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or better and a 3.5 GPA or better on all “core” and “professional emphasis” course work. Scholarship selection criteria include professional conferences, workshops, or seminars attended; professional memberships; volunteer or paid experiences related to the ESS profession; positions held in the University; civic clubs, or other organizations; and membership in other academic/scholarly societies.
Pitt County Student Receives Award at University of Mount Olive
Cory Whaley of Greenville was recognized for his achievements at the University of Mount Olive’s Annual Awards Ceremony. He received the Music Student of the Year award. Whaley is a senior music: piano major. The award is given to the senior music major who best exemplifies the ideals of a successful music major by demonstrating discipline and musical excellence. Selection criteria include: minimum GPA of 3.2, music major, academic excellence, professional service, and outstanding musical ability.
Wayne County Students Receive Awards at the University of Mount Olive
Several Wayne County students were recognized for their achievements at the University of Mount Olive’s Annual Awards Ceremony. Among those receiving awards were:
Sheila Bynum of Fremont received the Passionate Nurse Award. Bynum is a junior nursing: pre-licensure major. The award is given to a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) student who embodies the heart and soul of nursing through their dedication, compassion, and zeal for the profession. This prestigious accolade recognizes an individual who excels academically and consistently goes above and beyond to promote the best practices in nursing and offer unwavering support to their peers.
Rena Williams of Dudley received the Psychology Student of the Year. Williams is a senior bachelor of science: psychology major. The award is given to a senior with a 3.5 GPA or higher. The student should demonstrate quality independent research project or clinical proficiency as demonstrated by the internship site supervisor’s and university supervisor’s evaluations. The student should also display a commitment to the department/major by participating in clubs, seminars, panels, and events.
Caroline Best of Four Oaks received the Visual Arts Student of the Year. Best is a senior art major. This award is given to the senior student who best exemplifies the ideals of the successful visual arts major by demonstrating discipline, creativity, and integrity.
Anna Bocock of Faison received the Jan Brewer Scholarship Award. Bocock is a senior exercise science major. The Jan Brewer Scholarship Award, given in memory of Janet Ruth Brewer (1959—1981), class of 1979, is made possible by an endowment established in Ms. Brewer’s honor in April 1980 by her classmates and friends. Brewer, a member of Dublin Grove Free Will Baptist Church, though born with Cystic Fibrosis, achieved her goal of earning a college degree when she received an associate in science degree from Mount Olive College. This award is given to a student who is successfully overcoming adversity in pursuit of a college education. The Jan Brewer Scholarship is payable on future educational expenses at University of Mount Olive.

Wilson County Student Receives Award at the University of Mount Olive
Alice Blackwell of Sims was recognized for her achievements at the University of Mount Olive’s Annual Awards Ceremony.
Alice Blackwell of Sims received the Early Childhood Education Student of the Year. Blackwell is a senior early childhood education major. This award is given to an outstanding ECE student as selected by the Division of Education faculty. Selection criteria include having a GPA of 3.0 and having satisfactorily completed the senior research project.
