Cheryl Leon Completes Educational Journey, Ready to Inspire the Next Generation

JACKSONVILLE – Cheryl Leon, a devoted mother of eight and newly hired Exceptional Children Resource teacher, has fulfilled her lifelong dream of becoming an educator. A graduate of the University of Mount Olive (UMO), Leon earned her bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education in 2024 and is now working toward her teaching license.
Raised in a military family, Leon’s journey has taken her across states and countries, igniting a passion for teaching from an early age. Her love for education began in second grade during her time in England, where her teacher, Mrs. Eversman, inspired her.
“I remember lining up my stuffed animals and teaching them everything I had learned that day,” Leon shared. “That passion has stayed with me ever since.”
Leon’s journey to becoming an educator has been full of challenges and triumphs. She initially enrolled at UMO in 2019 while balancing full-time work and family life, including being pregnant with her youngest son. When the pressures became overwhelming, she stepped away from school. However, after focusing on her mental health and family, she returned determined to complete her education.
Since completing her bachelor’s degree in August, Leon has begun teaching first and second grade students, focusing on providing academic support while helping children develop social and emotional skills. On December 13, she walked across the stage to receive her diploma.
“My job isn’t just about academics,” Leon explained. “It’s about teaching children how to cope, self-regulate, and develop strategies for success—both in and outside the classroom.”
Leon’s role as a teacher aligns with her belief in the importance of shaping the next generation. “Teachers are not only responsible for academic development but they also play a critical role in fostering emotional intelligence and values,” she emphasized.
With plans to pursue a master’s degree in education, Leon is excited to continue growing as a teacher and making a meaningful impact in the lives of her students.
In encouraging other adults thinking about returning to school, she said, “Believe in yourself, push past the fear, and take the leap. You won’t regret it. If I can do it, anyone can.”
With her graduation ceremony scheduled for December 2024, Leon looks forward to celebrating this achievement surrounded by her family, knowing that her journey serves as an example of perseverance and determination.
