MOUNT OLIVE — The University of Mount Olive (UMO) Psychology Department has a full week ahead. On Thursday, April 3, from 11 AM to 1 PM, the annual Pie in the Face fundraiser will occur at Kemp Commons. Proceeds will help students attend and present their research at the Southeastern Psychological Association Conference (SEPA) in Atlanta. In addition to the fundraiser, the department will help raise awareness for Child Abuse Prevention Month by planting a Pinwheel Garden at Kemp Commons.
The fundraiser will offer a lighthearted and engaging way for students and community members to support students and a serious cause—preventing child abuse and neglect. Psychology faculty members, staff, coaches, and administrators will be on hand to take a pie in the face for a purpose, raising funds while also spotlighting the importance of safe, stable, and nurturing environments for children.

Following the fundraiser, the department will plant a Pinwheel Garden in front of Kemp Commons as part of the national Pinwheels for Prevention® campaign. Since its launch in 2008 by Prevent Child Abuse America, the pinwheel has become the symbol of a brighter future for children—representing the whimsy and innocence of childhood and a shared commitment to child well-being.
“Pinwheels serve as a visual reminder that we all play a role in ensuring every child has a chance to grow up in a safe and loving home,” said Natalie Kemp, psychology faculty member and co-chair of CARE for Wayne, a community coalition co-led by UMO and the Partnership for Children.
As part of Child Abuse Prevention Month, CARE for Wayne also encourages local agencies, businesses, and community groups to plant their own pinwheel gardens throughout Wayne County. These displays help raise awareness and inspire action to support children and families in the community.
UMO’s involvement continues with the upcoming “On the Right Track” event on April 8 from 4 to 6 PM at Herman Park, hosted by CARE for Wayne. The community event will feature family-friendly activities and resource information to promote positive parenting and child safety.
“Whether you’re a business leader promoting work-life balance or a neighbor offering a helping hand, every one of us can make a difference,” said Kemp. “Pinwheel gardens are more than decorations—they’re a call to action.”
