Winter 2026 TODAY Magazine

Dear Friends of the University of Mount Olive,
It is always a pleasure to welcome you to a new issue of TODAY, and this Winter 2026 edition arrives at a time of meaningful progress and purpose for the University of Mount Olive. Across campus, we continue to build on a strong foundation while responding to the needs of our students, our communities, and the state we proudly serve.
Throughout these pages, you will see how UMO is advancing its mission through intentional growth and academic focus. We share highlights from the launch of our Educational Livestock Facility, a long-envisioned project that strengthens hands-on agricultural education and community engagement. This issue also marks the debut of the Black Box rehearsal and recording space, expanding opportunities for creativity and collaboration in the performing arts. In addition, we celebrate an important academic milestone with the launch of UMO’s new School of Education, bringing renewed focus, expanded programs, and deeper partnerships to one of our most enduring academic strengths.
This edition introduces members of our Trojan family whose stories reflect the heart of our mission. From faculty leaders like Dr. Jason Davis, whose work bridges education and outreach, to students such as Lakeisha Yelverton and Wyatt Moore, whose paths reflect purpose and growth, these narratives speak to the lasting influence of a Mount Olive education. Our alumni and heritage features span generations and experiences, from Barbara Hinton’s vivid memories of the scrappy first year of Mount Olive College in 1954, to Brianna Williams’ return to UMO as part of our inaugural Doctor of Education cohort, to Cirilo Perez’s remarkable journey from eastern North Carolina to public service at the highest levels of government. Together, their stories reflect a shared spirit that continues to shape this institution.
As we celebrate our 75th Anniversary in 2026, we are grateful for the opportunity to honor our past while boldly investing in our future. UMO’s strength has always been rooted in people, in relationships, and in a belief that education grounded in purpose can change lives and communities.
Thank you for your continued connection to the University of Mount Olive. Whether you are an alumnus, donor, parent, or friend, you remain an essential part of our story. I hope this issue of TODAY fills you with pride in what we have accomplished together and confidence in the path ahead.
With gratitude and hope,

H. Edward Croom, Ed.D.
