Students in the House of Raeford Farms School of Agriculture & Biological Sciences have the opportunity to prepare for and earn professional certifications across a wide range of agricultural disciplines — from crop production and plant sciences to livestock management and wildlife education.

Hands-On Professional Development These certifications prepare students for careers in agriculture, environmental science, and natural resources — and are recognized by state agencies, national boards, and industry organizations across North Carolina and beyond.
Crop & Plant Sciences
NC Dept. of Agriculture & Consumer Services Commercial Pesticide Applicator
Students prepare for and take exams to become certified in Ornamental & Turf Pest Control, Agricultural Pest Control – Plant, and Agricultural Pest Control – Animal (Livestock & Poultry). After certification, students can be licensed to apply pesticides for hire in North Carolina.
American Society of Agronomy Certified Crop Advisor (CCA)
UMO students prepare for and can take both the North Carolina and International CCA exams. Certified Crop Advisors serve as respected consultants working with farmers and farm managers on production practices, crop improvement, and optimum yield recommendations. A bachelor of science in an agronomy-related field and two years of experience are required for licensure.
NC Nursery & Landscape Association Certified Plant Professional (CPP)
A rigorous written and plant identification exam that acknowledges proficiency in the green industry. Certified individuals demonstrate the ability to correctly identify plants and answer questions on nursery and landscape operations, plant maintenance, and utilization.
Livestock & Production
Beef Checkoff · NC Cattlemen's Association Beef Quality Assurance (BQA)
A national program that raises consumer confidence through proper management techniques and quality commitment. BQA ensures that farmers have the best quality measures in place for beef cattle handling and production. Locally administered through the NC Cattlemen's Association.
National Pork Board Pork Checkoff Pork Quality Assurance (PQA)
An education and certification program ensuring that swine farmers and farm employees use best management practices to promote food safety, quality livestock, and improved animal well-being.
National Pork Board Pork Checkoff Transport Quality Assurance (TQA)
Helps swine transporters, producers, and handlers learn how to best handle, move, and transport swine while ensuring animal well-being. Covers routine care, treatment, reproduction, moving, and loading through structured educational training.
NC Department of Environmental Quality Animal Waste Management
NC DEQ requires that all animal waste management operators be certified to manage waste systems and utilize nutrients. This certification is especially valuable for students pursuing careers in the livestock industry.
Wildlife & Safety
NC Wildlife Resources Commission Hunter Safety Instructor
The NC Wildlife Resources Commission Hunter Education Program certifies individuals to educate and certify safe hunters across North Carolina. Hunter Safety Educators promote safe handling of firearms and archery equipment, responsible ethical conduct, proper use of equipment, and the importance of wildlife management laws and regulations.
