MOUNT OLIVE – University of Mount Olive supporters, donors, and graduates experienced an unforgettable spring commencement weekend as former NFL All-Pro center, ESPN analyst, and faith-driven leader Jeff Saturday delivered not only the University’s commencement address, but also an intimate evening of conversation that left a lasting impression on attendees.
On the eve of commencement, University benefactors and close supporters gathered for an exclusive reception featuring heavy hors d’oeuvres and an engaging question-and-answer session with Saturday. Hosted by University of Mount Olive President Dr. H. Edward Croom, the evening offered guests a rare opportunity to hear firsthand from one of professional football’s most respected leaders as he reflected on his remarkable career, his devotion to family, and the foundational role of faith in shaping his life.
Throughout the evening, Saturday shared deeply personal stories, including the disappointment of going undrafted out of the University of North Carolina, the transformational moment that led him to fully commit his life to Christ, and the values that guided his 14-year NFL career. His transparency resonated with guests as he spoke candidly about balancing professional ambition with unwavering commitment to his wife, Karen, and their children.
“Relationships are where real change happens,” Saturday told attendees. “We can all make plans, but until we unite together with purpose and care for one another, true progress doesn’t happen.”
Saturday emphasized that while his football achievements brought public recognition, his greatest successes came through faith, family, and living with intentional boundaries. He spoke openly about turning down opportunities that would have compromised his family priorities, including stepping away from long-term coaching pursuits to preserve the values he and his wife established for their home.
His message consistently returned to servant leadership, encouraging graduates and supporters alike to pursue success not through personal recognition, but through collective impact.
“I don’t care who gets the credit,” Saturday said. “If we are aligned and working together, it’s amazing what can be accomplished.”
Drawing from experiences alongside legendary teammates such as Peyton Manning, Saturday described leadership as relational, transformational, and rooted in service. He urged students to recognize that career success alone does not define purpose.
“Your first job may not be your purpose,” he shared. “But your purpose is bigger – to serve others, glorify Christ, and make an impact where you are.”
Saturday also highlighted the importance of community involvement, sharing stories of his family’s philanthropic efforts, including work with children’s burn foundations, cancer support initiatives, and community outreach programs.
For University supporters, the evening provided more than celebrity access. It reinforced the institution’s own mission of cultivating leaders grounded in faith, service, and purpose.
Dr. Croom noted that Saturday’s values closely align with those of the University.
“Jeff’s message was deeply meaningful because it reflects what we strive to instill in our students – leadership rooted in humility, relationships, and Christian values,” said Croom.
Saturday’s appearance served as both an inspirational prelude to commencement and a fitting celebration of the University’s commitment to preparing graduates for lives of significance.
As graduates crossed the stage the following day, they did so carrying not only their degrees, but also the challenge from one of football’s greatest leaders to pursue lives marked by faith, integrity, and transformational leadership.
The University of Mount Olive is a private institution rooted in the liberal arts tradition with defining Christian values. The University was founded by the Convention of Original Free Will Baptists. For more information, visit www.umo.edu.
