The Herring Scholarship provides significant financial assistance to students from Duplin County and the Town of Mount Olive who are pursuing their education at the University of Mount Olive. Established through the generosity of the late Otha E. Herring, the scholarship was created to help local students achieve their academic goals while developing into leaders and engaged citizens. The scholarship remains one of the largest and most impactful scholarship programs available at the University of Mount Olive.

Eligibility Requirements

To be considered for the Herring Scholarship, applicants must:

  • Reside within the Town of Mount Olive or Duplin County, NC
  • Be accepted for admission to the University of Mount Olive
  • Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
  • Submit a complete scholarship application package
Application Materials

A complete application package includes:

  • Herring Scholarship application form
  • Two letters of recommendation from school, business, church, or community leaders
  • A 300–500 word essay describing the people and experiences that have shaped your values, character, and ethics
  • A recent photograph
  • Completed FAFSA
Please note: Applicants may also be invited to participate in an interview during the selection process.
Renewable Award
A Four-Year Commitment

Renewable for up to four consecutive years

The Herring Scholarship may be renewed each year, supporting recipients throughout their full degree program at the University of Mount Olive.

4 Years

To maintain eligibility, recipients must:

  • Remain enrolled as a full-time, degree-seeking student
  • Maintain satisfactory academic standing
  • Complete the FAFSA annually
