Hybrid Doctoral Education: Balancing Online and Face-to-Face Learning in Your Ed.D. Journey

December 4, 2025

If you’ve been thinking about pursuing your Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) but have been hesitant because of the time commitment required, it may be time to explore hybrid doctoral programs — such as the University of Mount Olive’s (UMO) Ed.D in Educational Leadership (K-12 Supervision).

By balancing work and doctoral studies, you can develop your leadership skills and advance your education without putting your career on hold.

Redefining the Modern Doctorate

Over the past couple of decades, doctoral programs have evolved significantly. No longer must students complete 100% of their coursework on a physical campus. Instead, flexible doctoral programs now make it possible for doctoral students to complete much of their coursework through online classes while still enjoying ample opportunity to meet with peers and faculty face-to-face for stimulating discourse and discussion.

Through the University of Mount Olive’s School of Education, our Ed.D. in Educational Leadership offers the ideal blend of academic rigor and accessibility.

What Is Hybrid Doctoral Education?

So, what exactly does a hybrid education entail at the doctoral level? By knowing what to expect, you can determine whether this path may be right for you.

Defining the Hybrid Model

In a hybrid degree program, students complete some of their coursework online and some of it in a “traditional” face-to-face format on a physical campus. Through this type of blended learning in higher education, students enjoy the best of both worlds. In addition to more flexible scheduling, they can take part in valuable interactions with their cohort while exploring real-world applications of their studies.

How Hybrid Differs from Fully Online or On-Campus Formats

Compared to a fully on-campus doctoral residency, a hybrid learning experience provides students with greater flexibility, especially in scheduling. Rather than having to commute to a physical campus for every class, students can enjoy completing some of their coursework from the convenience of their homes or anywhere else they have access to a computer and internet connection.

Meanwhile, compared to a fully online and asynchronous doctoral program, a hybrid model still provides opportunities for students to meet on-campus, contribute to meaningful discourse, and participate in their communities.

At UMO, our Ed.D. in Educational Leadership offers an ideal blend of in-person collaboration and digital independence — a happy medium for many working professionals in education.

Benefits of Hybrid Learning for Doctoral Students

What could you stand to gain from a hybrid leadership in education doctorate degree?

Flexibility Without Isolation

Traditional online doctorate programs can feel isolating, especially in asynchronous settings where you may never truly interact with any of your classmates or professors.

Hybrid delivery, on the other hand, supports professionals who are balancing work and doctoral studies with real-world interaction. At the same time, some online coursework frees up valuable time and makes scheduling easier.

Meaningful Mentorship and Collaboration

With monthly face-to-face sessions, students in online doctoral programs in education can enjoy networking, mentorship, and shared research discussions that promote useful dialogue and professional growth. The UMO doctoral program leverages experienced, actively practicing professionals as instructors which ensures that students learn from leaders who are actively engaged in today’s schools and districts. These instructors bring firsthand experience with current policies, challenges, and innovations, allowing students to connect theory to real-world practice.

Continuous Engagement and Motivation

At the same time, a hybrid program can also help doctoral students sustain accountability between residencies through asynchronous learning. Through the use of online discussion boards, virtual check-ins, and cohort collaboration tools, students have the support they need to stay motivated and on-track.

Challenges — and How UMO Helps Overcome Them

If you’ve been putting off getting your doctoral degree, you’ve probably had concerns about issues like time management and other commitments. At UMO, our Ed.D. in Educational Leadership helps students overcome common obstacles and earn the advanced degree they can feel proud of.

Managing Time and Commitments

Many doctoral students find that, even in a hybrid program, it helps to block out dedicated time for schoolwork in their busy schedules, allowing them to learn at their own pace. This may mean setting aside an hour after work each day, or even carving time out of your weekend to work your academics into the rest of your responsibilities.

With a maximum of 15 students admitted into the program each year, UMO’s structured cohort model supports accountability.

Maintaining Research Momentum

The thought of having to complete a dissertation is a roadblock for many professionals who want to earn their doctorate degrees. However, it doesn’t have to be.

There are six one hour dissertation coaching seminar courses designed to familiarize students with dissertation structure, APA, and resource collection. As a component of the coaching seminars, students will select a dissertation chair, begin the topic selection process, create an annotated bibliography, and develop an outline of the proposal document. As the seminars progress, students will select a dissertation committee, learn about the IRB process, expand the proposal draft outline, develop research questions, and begin writing Chapter 2. Doctoral candidates will complete a dissertation in practice (DiP). A dissertation in practice (DiP) is a thesis that uses research and evidence to explore and solve a real-world problem in a professional or academic setting. This is different from a traditional dissertation, which is usually associated with Ph.D. degrees and is based on academic theory. A DiP has a relevant focus and aims to improve problems through scholarly inquiry.

Plus, with resources like online access to UMO’s library and research databases, you’ll be supported every step of the way.

Staying Connected Across Modalities

With small class sizes, a responsive faculty, and consistent online support from day one, students in UMO’s Ed.D. in Educational Leadership program never have to worry about slipping through the cracks. Our strong communication culture means you’ll be in regular contact with your professors, advisors, and peers through digital interactions in a virtual classroom and in-person interactions.

The Ed.D. Journey: From Coursework to Dissertation

During your time in UMO’s Ed.D. in Educational Leadership program, you’ll build valuable and career-ready skills that prepare you to advance into senior-level leadership roles and make a real difference in the lives of learners.

Leadership-Focused Curriculum

The Doctorate of Education in Educational Leadership (EdD) program is directly aligned with the North Carolina Standards for Superintendents. These seven standards are used as a framework to guide the practice of superintendents and other senior-level school executives. The standards include the following: 1) Strategic Leadership, 2) Instructional Leadership, 3) Cultural Leadership, 4) Human Resource Leadership, 5) Managerial Leadership, 6) External Development Leadership, and 7) Micropolitical Leadership.

These courses help prepare educators for such roles as superintendent, assistant superintendent, or education specialist.

Blended Residency Experience

In addition to leadership-focused coursework, students in a hybrid Ed.D. program can enjoy a blended residency experience that allows them to collaborate with their peers, engage in meaningful discussion, and develop their research plans for their Dissertation in Practice. These residencies are an excellent opportunity to collaborate, receive valuable mentorship and guidance, and participate in the peer review process.

Dissertation as a Real-World Impact Project

Students in UMO’s Ed.D. program don’t confine their learning to the classroom. Instead, the doctoral research conducted as part of this program is designed to make a real-world impact, addressing practical educational challenges and paving the way for improvement that aligns with their career goals.

As part of our hybrid Ed.D. program, all students complete and defend a dissertation that identifies and solves a real problem in the educational system.

Through your dissertation research, you’ll apply the concepts and evidence-based solutions you’ve learned in your hybrid courses program to a real context, allowing you to make a difference in the field while contributing to a growing body of knowledge.

Why Hybrid Learning Is the Future of Doctoral Education

For busy educators, a hybrid Ed.D. program offers unrivaled benefits when compared to a traditional on-campus program or even a 100% online program. At UMO, we believe this blended learning format is truly the future of distance learning and doctoral education for those who want the best of both worlds.

Accessibility for Diverse Learners

The flexible format of a hybrid doctoral program makes an advanced degree more accessible for diverse learners, including busy educators who don’t want to put their professional lives on-hold to return to school. With convenient scheduling and online coursework, these professionals can work their degrees into their schedules on their own time.

Likewise, for learners in more rural areas where commuting to a physical campus for every class is simply not possible, hybrid degree programs and online courses offer a level of flexibility that could make an advanced education more accessible.

Innovation in Higher Education

Through blended learning in higher education, institutions like UMO lead in flexible, student-centered doctoral design that empowers students to explore new topics, make discoveries, and conduct research in areas that have been previously overlooked, including online education. This is exemplified in the final dissertation, where educators can solve real-world problems and designate themselves as thought leaders in the field.

Students benefit from continuous support, guidance, and mentorship provided by experienced and knowledgeable faculty in the Ed.D. program. This allows them to focus on their specific interests within the field and foster genuine innovation in education.

Lifelong Leadership Development

For educators who are looking to grow not just professionally but personally as well, a hybrid Ed.D. in education from UMO can make that possible. Students in our Ed.D. program complete coursework that prepares them for advanced and fulfilling roles in educational leadership, including superintendent, assistant superintendent, or education specialist. In these kinds of roles, education professionals can apply what they learned in their degree programs to make a real difference in the lives of learners and in the communities they serve.

Meanwhile, completing an Ed.D. program can help education professionals boost their own credibility in the field, allowing them to serve as thought leaders and agents of true organizational change.
And of course, at the personal level, earning an Ed.D. fosters a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment that can be extremely rewarding. This is especially true in the sense that an Ed.D. program results in a commitment to a lifetime of learning. As the field of education continues to grow and evolve, you’ll always have your education to fall back on and can apply your critical thinking, research, and leadership skills to adapt as needed.
