MOUNT OLIVE – The University of Mount Olive’s premier a cappella ensemble, Carolina Sound, recently experienced a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity when world-renowned vocal artist, producer, and arranger Deke Sharon spent a full day on campus leading workshops, coaching, and inspiring the group.
Often hailed as the “Father of Contemporary A Cappella,” Sharon has shaped the modern sound of the genre through his prolific career as a performer, arranger, music producer, author, and coach. He is credited with founding the Contemporary A Cappella Society, the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA), and has worked on hit projects ranging from Pitch Perfect to NBC’s The Sing-Off.
During his visit, Sharon engaged with Carolina Sound members in a day-long training session that focused on vocal blend, stage presence, and the artistry of authentic performance. For students, it was a chance to learn directly from the man responsible for bringing contemporary a cappella into the cultural mainstream.
“Having Deke Sharon on our campus was an absolute honor,” said Lester Rector, Director of Carolina Sound. “His energy, insight, and encouragement elevated our students in ways that will leave a lasting impact not only on their musical abilities but also on their confidence as performers. It was truly an unforgettable day for Carolina Sound.”
Sharon’s visit reflects the University’s ongoing commitment to providing students with unique, high-caliber experiences that prepare them for success in music, performance, and beyond.
