Getting to Know Jasmine Brown
HRM Major at the University of Mount Olive
WILMINGTON – Jasmine Brown of Riegelwood, NC enrolled at the University of Mount Olive in Wilmington in August of 2013 seeking her bachelor’s degree in Human Resources Management (HRM).
“I chose HRM as a major, because I like working with and helping different types of people,” Brown said. “I think HRM is a growing field and it provides a lot of room for advancement.”
The flexible one-night-a-week programming has worked well for 22 year-old Brown who juggles a full time job as a studio assistant at Value Place Hotels and a budding singing career that takes her all over the United States. She recently returned from Alabama with a two day rest before heading back on tour in Atlanta, Georgia. Brown is part of the Lamanuel Boykin and Company gospel group. She has been singing and traveling with the group for six years.
“The modular style of programming at UMO at Wilmington is a wonderful idea and way to achieve a degree,” Brown said. “It allows my schedule to be flexible, which gives me more time to focus on my singing. I am able to juggle family, work, and school by organizing my priorities. I feel like whatever is important, one will make time for it. School is definitely on my important list.”
Also important to Brown is the personal attention that she receives at UMO in Wilmington. In particular she notes that Assistant Professor of Management Dr. Deborah Houston, also a UMO graduate, has been a particular role model for her.
“Dr. Houston has really inspired me,” Brown shared. “Dr. Houston is a wonderful person and I learn so much in her classes. I can apply the information she teaches in every aspect of my life. I have learned so much through her, and I am proud to say that she is my favorite teacher!”
Brown is on schedule to graduate in December of 2015. She then plans to enroll in the MBA program, with the ultimate goal of obtaining a HRM position within the healthcare field.
“UMO has prepared me to achieve my goals by teaching me how to deal with different types of people, providing strategies and solutions that can be implemented to achieve business success, and introducing to me different aspects of the business world,” Brown stated.
To potential students thinking of going back to college, Brown says, “Returning to college is not an easy task. It takes motivation to return to school and get your degree. Although this journey gets tough, don’t quit, because anything worth having is worth waiting and working hard for. So, be encouraged and let your life be transformed!”
