Jeffery Billups’ Success Story
You may ask why Jeffery Billups, II is going back to school after having already earned a bachelor and master’s degree in Criminal Justice. It’s a simple answer from Jeffery. He wants to transfer from the peer support side of mental health to become a clinical mental health counselor, and he knows in order to achieve those goals, he has to go back to school.
As a student in the Master of Science in Counseling: Clinical Mental Health, Jeffery understands the seriousness of what he is embarking on. His professors reminded students they are in the life-changing business, and they are not here to just pass you, but to prepare you to be a proficient counselor.
“My department chair knows me by name, and my two advisors are always checking in with me to make sure I’m staying on track and to see if they can assist me,” said Jeffery. He continues by saying, “The instructors are down to earth and real. They will help you and have a genuine concern for you when life happens.”
Jeffery also appreciates how close his classmates have grown saying they are the ultimate support system who are there for each other just like family – both in class and out. He is always trying to stay positive and helping to encourage and motivate others.
When asked why he would encourage other adults like him to pursue their dream of going back to college, he said “Go after what you want. The journey may not be as tough as you think it may be in your mind.”
