MOC Alumna Graduates from Duke Nursing Program
MOUNT OLIVE – Twenty five year old Michelle Cobb is a 2010 graduate of University of Mount Olive, where she majored in mathematics with a minor in biology. An Honors student Cobb also participated in numerous activities on campus including choir, varsity cheerleading, Tri Beta, the Henderson Science Club and Math Club. As a Princeton native, Michelle enjoyed the small campus and friendly atmosphere University of Mount Olive provided. “It allowed for more personal relationships with teachers and advisors. My professors set high goals for me, leading to greater accomplishments than I would have imagined for myself,” she explained.
Those greater accomplishments include Cobb graduating from an accelerated nursing program at Duke University in May 2012. “I chose Duke because it had a 16-month program for individuals who already had a bachelor’s degree. The Duke School of Nursing is rated among the top ten nursing schools in the nation. Had it not been for my advisor at MOC, I would not have believed I could get into the nursing program at Duke.”
The four years Cobb spent at University of Mount Olive gave her the confidence and tools she needed to realize her potential. “University of Mount Olive helped me grow from a girl who had no idea what she wanted to do, to knowing and understanding who I wanted to be. I developed and strengthened my skills in leadership, organization, time management, and critical thinking, just to name a few. These skills have helped to ease the transition from new graduate to professional nurse.”
Cobb’s college journey hasn’t ended yet. She plans on becoming a certified nurse midwife in the near future. In the meantime, Cobb works in the Duke Birthing Center, where she takes care of mothers and newborns after deliveries. “University of Mount Olive allowed me to develop skills that are essential in the nursing field. For individuals who want to enter a field of health care requiring a graduate degree, I believe MOC is a great place to begin their studies and would prepare them to enter into a professional program.”
