Senior Ag Ed Major Sets Sights on Career Success After Graduation

MOUNT OLIVE- Dylan Gupere, a Kenly resident, has cherished all of the opportunities that he received through the University of Mount Olive (UMO).  Gupere, a senior agriculture education major, has recently landed a job at Protech Advisory Services, which he will begin shortly after his graduation on May 7. He attributes his accomplishments and success to the classes and skills that he acquired from UMO.

Attending UMO was an easy choice for Gupere.  “I learned about UMO agriculture when I attended North Johnston High School. After touring the campus, I knew UMO was the right choice for me,” recalled Gupere.

In the fall of 2012, Gupere started his journey at UMO and found a home in the Agriculture Department.  He immersed himself into classes such as soil science, crop science, and integrated pest management that encouraged his love for agriculture.  He also became heavily involved with the Collegiate FFA and was a lead work study employee for the Ag Department. He was instrumental in the construction of the shade house and the arboretum on the UMO campus.

His participation and success at UMO landed Gupere two different internships at Bayer CropScience and BASF Crop Protection over the summers of 2014 and 2015. Gupere thanked Dr. Sandy Maddox, division chair of the Agriculture Department, for helping him receive these internships.

“Dr. Maddox has been a great influence on me,” said Gupere.  “She helped me select the correct classes and helped me with my two internships.  At Bayer CropScience, I learned about soybean genetics, and at BASF I worked with herbicide research and learned how herbicides work to control weeds. The skills I learned will be put to use in my future career.”

UMO has also given Gupere the opportunity to gain certifications for the agriculture industry. He has received the NC Pesticide Applicator License, Certified Plant Professional, National Pork Check Off-Pork Assurance, and NC Department of Environmental and Natural Resources Operator in Charge Waste Management.

Gupere will soon begin his career at Protech Advisory Services, where he will work in agriculture crop consulting. He also hopes to apply for graduate school and receive a master’s degree in agronomy.

In conclusion, Gupere said, “UMO has helped to develop my knowledge and passion for agriculture and has set me on the path to a promising career in the agriculture industry. UMO truly solidified my passion for agriculture.”
