Sports Management Students Gain Insights into Golf and Resort Management

MOUNT OLIVE, NC –Several University of Mount Olive (UMO) sports management students recently visited Pinehurst Resort & Country Club to gain insights into golf and resort management from some of the industry’s top leaders. Dr. Tony Franklin, UMO Associate Professor of Sports Management, coordinated the event.

The event commenced with a welcome address from Tom Pashley, President of Pinehurst Resort & Country Club, who introduced the speakers. Matt Massei, Executive Vice President; Bob Farren, Director of Golf Course Maintenance; Kyle Daly, Head Golf Professional; Ben Bridgers, Pinehurst Country Club General Manager; and John Jeffreys, No. 2 Golf Course Superintendent discussed their roles and responsibilities within Pinehurst Resort & Country Club.

Attendees were given a tour that showcased the Club’s current capital projects, including the construction of the new USGA headquarters, World Golf Hall of Fame (relocation from FL), USGA golf research facilities, two additional golf courses, additional vacation rentals, and additional renovations throughout the resort.

The event provided a networking opportunity for students to interact with industry professionals and learn about potential career opportunities, collaborations, internships, field training, and volunteering. During lunch at Pinehurst Resort, UMO students had the opportunity to network with the speakers and other industry professionals.

“Collaborations with the UMO Golf Teams, as well as the inaugural class of the United States Golf Association Greenskeeper Apprenticeship Program at SCC contributed to the success of this student experience,” said Franklin.
