University of Mount Olive Announces Winner of its ‘Next Great Story’ Scholarship

Mount Olive, NC – The University of Mount Olive announced the winner of its 2016 ‘Next Great Story’ scholarship. Susan Herring from Beulaville, NC will receive a scholarship worth more than $60,000 to attend any one of UMO’s adult programs throughout eastern North Carolina.  Herring will attend the Jacksonville location.

Herring was one of the weekly qualifiers chosen from numerous entries received during the six-week campaign which encouraged participants to share the story of their hopes, dreams, and hardships on UMO’s Facebook page.

“We are in awe of the many nominees and their stories,” says University of Mount Olive President Dr. Philip P. Kerstetter. “Learning about their triumphs in overcoming hardships inspired us all, and it clearly showed their incredible strength of character.  We were honored to be a part of this extraordinary campaign and give back to our community.”

Herring’s entry spoke of her amazing journey over the last 16 years which included the passing of her parents; her husband’s seven-month deployment out of Camp Lejeune; taking in her sister’s five children; and becoming pregnant with her first child. “With further education I will be able to support my suddenly big family with greater confidence and strength,” she wrote. “With a degree in health care administration, I could do so much for so many people. This scholarship would put me in a field that needs hardworking, passionate, and dedicated people like me. “

In closing, she quoted Nelson Mandela, “Education is the most powerful weapon for changing the world.”  “God sent us to be his hands and feet, and I continue to trust in him with all my heart,” she continued.

In addition to tuition, Herring will receive books purchased through the campus bookstore.

UMO offers one-night-a-week baccalaureate degree programs for adult students. Bachelor degree options include accounting, business management, criminal justice and criminology, early childhood education, healthcare management, human resource management, leadership, management information systems, and religious studies.  An associate degree in general studies is also available.  The University also offers online programs including the RN to BSN program for registered nurses who have graduated with an associate degree or diploma in nursing; criminal justice and criminology; the associate degree in general studies; and the Master of Business Administration degree.  Coming soon, the University plans to offer the master of education degree and the master of science in nursing degree.
