UMO Hosts Agricultural Academy Students for Open House

MOUNT OLIVE, NC – The University of Mount Olive (UMO) recently hosted students enrolled in UMO Agricultural Academies located at South Johnston High School, Johnston County; Providence Grove High School, Randolph County; and the Northeast Regional School of Biotechnology and Agriscience-NERSBA, Martin County. Academy students gathered for an open house on the UMO campus and took an extended tour of the Kornegay Student Farm.
UMO Agricultural Academies provide 11th and 12th-grade students the opportunity to complete high school graduation requirements while simultaneously earning an Associate Degree (AS) in Agriculture from UMO. Students receive their AS by completing 60 hours of required college level courses. A significant number of Academy graduates continue their education by completing a BS degree at UMMO or at other institutions. Graduates attending UMO and pursuing agricultural degrees enter the university immediately after high school as a junior and complete their BS in only two additional years.
The 55 open house student attendees learned about numerous UMO degree programs focused on agricultural and biological sciences. They participated in discussions centered on college admissions and financial aid, as well as experienced a vibrant college environment. In addition, students gathered important information about diverse employment opportunities in agriculture.
The finale of the day was a presentation and question and answer session with social media influencer Michelle Miller, known by her Instagram title, The Farm Babe. The one-on-one discussion centered on issues facing the agricultural industry. Students posed questions to the Farm Babe about social media, advocacy, and messaging in agriculture.
