UMO Prepares for Homecoming Weekend
MOUNT OLIVE – The University of Mount Olive (UMO) is preparing to welcome alumni, current students, and community members to its annual Pickle Classic Homecoming Weekend November 20-22. The weekend will include a variety of new activities sprinkled with some familiar favorite traditions.
Activities on Thursday, November 20, will include an art show exhibit and a musical concert. The Grubbs and Williams Art Show will feature ceramics and woodwork pieces on display in the Teresa Pelt Grubbs Art Gallery from 8 AM to 5 PM the entire weekend. The University of Mount Olive Concert Choir will present their fall concert at 7:30 PM in the Historic Assembly Hall located at 207Wooten Street in Mount Olive.
On Friday, November 21, the 18th Annual Alumni Scholarship Golf Tournament will tee off at Southern Wayne Country Club. The four man, captain’s choice tournament will conclude with a pizza dinner and raffle drawing. The 48th Annual Pickle Classic basketball tournament will begin at 5 PM in Kornegay Arena with Barton College taking on Bluefield State College. At 7 PM the UMO men’s basketball team faces-off against Virginia State University.
On Saturday, November 22, the Alumni Association will hold its board meeting at 8:30 AM in the Hennessee Room at the Lois K. Murphy Regional Center. Afterwards, there will be an Alumni Memorial service to remember those alumni who have passed away in the last year. The event will take place at 9 AM at the Alumni Crosswalk. The Trojan Trot 5K will begin at 9 AM in front of the Pope Wellness Center and Kornegay Arena parking lot. At noon the women’s basketball team will compete against UNC Pembroke in Kornegay Arena. Immediately afterwards an alumnae softball game is planned for 1 PM on the Nancy Chapman Cassell Field.
From 2 to 4 PM there will be a Homecoming Harvest on Kemp Commons featuring an alumni art show, fun activities, and music. At 3 PM in the Lois K. Murphy Regional Center, the University will induct 4 new members into the Athletics Hall of Fame. The 1977-1978 Women’s Basketball Team will also be recognized with the Pioneer Award.
Pickle Classic action will continue in Kornegay Arena with Barton and Virginia State playing at 5 PM. At 7:30 PM, the UMO men’s basketball team will take on Bluefield State for the final game of the weekend. Pickle Classic tickets are $15 in advance for the entire weekend or $10 at the door for each night. Tickets for the women’s game are $6. Following the basketball games, Ribeyes restaurant, located at 211 N. Center Street in Mount Olive, invites the public to enjoy a free concert by Spare Change at 9:30 PM.
