UMO Raises Money for Cancer

Trojan Athletics and UMO student service group Sisterhood of Crown and Martlet (SOCAM) raised more than $2400 for the Southeastern Cancer Care (SCC), a local organization based in Goldsboro that assists cancer patients and their families in eastern North Carolina. Services provided by SCC include food, transportation, financial assistance, wigs, prosthetics, and more. This is the first year that the department of athletics has partnered with SOCAM to raise donations for this organization.

Athletics fundraisers include Denim Day donations and Cures for the Colors t-shirts. “We are excited to again partner with Southeastern Cancer Care in their Cures for the Colors campaign and know that we are impacting care for the local community,” said LaToya Lindsey, associate athletic director.  “This is the fourth year of partnership with SCC, but the ninth year of supporting cancer research, including the Susan G. Komen Foundation.”

For the past 4 years, SOCAM has held an annual fundraiser called Sing For Another Day, where money were raised for the Susan G. Komen Foundation. This year, SOCAM wanted to make a bigger impact on their community and decided to also raise money for SCC. The event included performances by UMO students, faculty, staff and alumni. Dr. James N. Atkins of South Eastern Medical Oncology Center also spoke at the event about SCC and what the organization does for eastern North Carolina. Fundraising efforts included event sponsors, bake sales, luminaries and Cures for the Colors t-shirts.
