UMO Students to Compete in 2015 NCICU Ethics Bowl
University of Mount Olive Students to Compete in 2015 NCICU Ethics Bowl
MOUNT OLIVE- Six students from the University of Mount Olive will participate in the 2015 North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities (NCICU) Ethics Bowl. The competition will take place on February 6 and 7 at the Campbell University School of Law in Raleigh. More than 100 college students from 20 of North Carolina’s independent colleges and universities will participate in this year’s competition.
Launched in 2012, the NCICU Ethics Bowl is an annual statewide competition that gives students an opportunity to think critically and collaboratively about how to make ethical decisions. The goal of the event is to prepare students for the kind of ethical dilemmas they will face in the workplace. The competition places a premium on preparation and quick thinking, with team members expected to field questions on the spot from the other teams.
Business, government, and foundation leaders serve as judges and moderators at the Ethics Bowl, which pits student teams against one another through four rounds of debate on ethical questions, including those the students have researched in advance, as well as a surprise question. Following the fourth round for all teams on Saturday, the most successful teams compete in two semi-final rounds, held concurrently, and followed by a final round.
In addition to the team competition, the participating UMO students will have the opportunity to meet corporate, foundation and government leaders from across the state that serve as judges and moderators for the competition.
The team of students that will be representing the University of Mount Olive include Makenzie Braswell, a freshman business management major from Faison, NC; Eduardo Fleurent, a junior accounting major from Argentina; Dominic Martel, a junior business management major from Canada; Hyago Matielo, a senior business management major from Brazil; David Meza, a senior MIS major from Pikeville, NC; and Anh Nguyen, a senior business management major, from Vietnam.
The UMO coordinators for this event are Dr. Joey Long, assistant professor of human resources management, and Dr. Hollis Phelps, assistant professor of religion. Phelps will also serve as the team coach, a role that he has served for three years with the NCICU Ethics Bowl competition.
