University of Mount Olive Hosting Medicinal Plant Lecture
MOUNT OLIVE – University of Mount Olive is hosting a lecture about medicinal plants by Dr. A.J. Bullard on Tuesday, February 12, at 7 p.m. in videoconference rooms 114 and 115 of the Communications Building adjacent to Moye Library. This program is one of the Wayne County Reads events related to Rudolfo Anaya’s novel Bless Me, Ultima.
Bullard is a retired dentist who writes the column “Botany with Bullard” in the Mount Olive Messenger. He is particularly knowledgeable of the woody flora of eastern North Carolina and will lecture about medicinal plants and herbs that have surprising healing properties.
In addition to the medicinal plants, he will discuss edible plants and beautifully flowering plants. He will discuss Yaupon (used in tea), Summer Sweet (used for soap and for honey forage), Jerusalem Oak (used to purge hook and tape worms from farm animals and humans). Also featured will be lovely flowers such as silky camellia, magnolia vine, and mountain laurel and edible herbs such as poke weed and wild vanilla (used as a fragrance and commercially used in smoking tobacco).
Wayne County Reads is a community-wide reading campaign for Wayne County, N.C., established in 2004.
