University of Mount Olive Students Attend AIGA Meeting

MOUNT OLIVE – University of Mount Olive students interested in art and design assembled for a special meeting featuring Raleigh American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) members Kristin Fowler and Richard Griffis.

AIGA’s mission is to advance designing as a professional craft, strategic tool and vital cultural force. They represent a variety of professions under the umbrella of communication design, ranging from book and type design to interactive design and experience design.

Kristin Fowler, director of emerging designer programming for AIGA, received her bachelor of arts in graphic design from Meredith College. She is currently employed as a graphic designer at Liaison Design Group. Rich Griffis, director of student programming for AIGA, recently graduated from East Carolina University with a bachelor of fine arts in graphic design. He is currently employed at French/West/Vaughan as a graphic designer.

“The meeting was a mixture of information and inspiration,” said Matthew Stevens, MOC alumnus and current graphic designer. Stevens organized the meeting to help foster a sense of unity among art majors and open up networking opportunities following graduation.

“Kristin and Richard explained how their involvement in AIGA helped them grow professionally through networking events, lunch & learn series, portfolio reviews, and more. They encouraged students to participate in these events and also look at the possibility of starting a student design group at MOC. It’s important for MOC students to get involved in this organization to grow professionally and gain job opportunities.”
