NEWTON GROVE – Brianna Cruz arrived at the University of Mount Olive from her hometown in Newton Grove with a passion for artistic expression and a drive to transform everyday experiences into something magical. Now a Graphic Design major on track to graduate in May, Cruz has developed a unique illustrative style that blends reality with a touch of fantasy, captivating viewers with intricate line work, whimsical themes, and imaginative detail.

“As an illustrator, I’m always looking for the best method to convey the concepts I have about the world and myself,” said Cruz. “My images are never exactly realistic looking—even when they’re based on my own experiences. Sometimes, I fully give up on ‘reality’ in favor of a little bit of fantasy.”

Her portfolio features dynamic and expressive illustrations that embrace natural and surreal elements. Cruz fills each piece with elaborate patterns and textures using various mediums, creating tones and shading with layers of delicate linework. For her, every line holds the potential to evoke deep emotion and invite a sense of wonder.

“I focus on making each piece detailed,” she explained. “Above all, I enjoy making my art whimsical and imaginative—transforming the ordinary into something dreamlike and full of wonder.”

Cruz credits her growth as an artist to the supportive environment and mentorship she found at UMO. “Developing a new appreciation for art has been one of the most meaningful moments of my time here,” she shared. “Through the guidance of my professors, I have come to see art as a powerful form of expression and connection.”

A defining experience for Cruz was having her artwork showcased during an on-campus art show. “Seeing students and families admire the work I created in my first year filled me with pride,” she recalled. “It inspired me to continue improving and pushing myself as an illustrator.”

That inspiration will come full circle this spring as Cruz prepares to showcase her senior art designs at the University of Mount Olive’s annual Student Art Show, opening on Thursday, April 29, from 4 to 6 PM in Laughinghouse Hall. The event is free and open to the public.  It will highlight various works created by art and graphic design majors—including many first-time exhibitors—alongside the capstone projects of senior visual arts students like Cruz. The exhibition will remain open from April 28 through May 2.

Beyond the classroom and studio, Cruz has found joy and community through campus life, especially in the Campus Activities Board (CAB) and Psych Club events. “These moments offered a break from stress and allowed me to relax, laugh, and connect with others,” she said. “The friendships I’ve built through experiences like these have been a constant source of support and encouragement.”
