March 7, 2024

MOUNT OLIVE – The University of Mount Olive Tillman School of Business recently hosted its annual Career Panel. During the event, individuals representing several different businesses and organizations spoke to a room full of students about career opportunities, interview tips, challenges in the workplace, artificial intelligence, social media, and so much more. Many of the guest speakers were returning alumni who felt it was important to give back to the University and its students by serving on the panel.

The panelists represented the following firms: Grifols; Lewis Systems & Service Co., Inc.; Forvis; Pepsi Bottling Ventures; UNC Health Wayne; United Therapeutics, and KS Bank. The panelists shared the importance of internships, job shadowing, networking, and having a mentor. They also discussed the value of good communication skills and lifelong learning to excel in any work environment.

The panelists stressed for students to be prepared for interviews by researching the organization in which they are interested in and asking meaningful questions. One panelist said, “I know you may be nervous going into a job interview, but find your confidence not only in your abilities, but also in your intentions. Show potential employers that you are coachable and that you have a passion for the organization in which you are applying. Also, be prepared to give real examples of when and how you have worked in teams, solved problems, and took initiative.”

At the close of the event, students had the opportunity to network, ask questions, and dig deeper into the areas that interested them most.

Moderator of the event, Waylon Woodall said, “The Tillman School of Business sees the value in offering opportunities for students to see and hear first-hand from top business executives about their own career journeys. They offer our students valuable advice and pointers that I know will positively affect their futures. We are so appreciative of each of our panelists for sharing their time and wisdom. We are also proud of the warm welcome that they were given by our students.”

The University of Mount Olive is a private institution rooted in the liberal arts tradition with defining Christian values. The University was founded by the Convention of Original Free Will Baptists.
