Barfield Receives Founders’ Leadership Award
MOUNT OLIVE – During University of Mount Olive’s 60th Anniversary Founders Day Celebration, Josh Barfield of Newton Grove received the 2011 Founders Leadership Award. The award is a $500 scholarship sponsored by the late Dr. W. Burkette Raper, president of University of Mount Olive 1954-1995, and his wife, Mrs. Rose M. Raper. The award was given this year in memory of Raper for his extraordinary leadership, services, and support for the advancement of the College.
In presenting the award President of University of Mount Olive Philip P. Kerstetter said, “Josh Barfield is the epitome of the University of Mount Olive slogan – Lives Transformed.” Kerstetter spoke of Barfield’s accomplishments and involvements at MOC. Barfield has worked as a resident advisor, served as captain of the club lacrosse team, and has been a guest speaker at several of the College’s chapel services. Barfield has led Student Theological Fellowship as the president for the last two years; he currently interns for the Office of Public Relations, and he also serves as a supply minister for Original Free Will Baptist Churches all over Eastern North Carolina. After graduating from University of Mount Olive in May, Barfield plans to pursue his master’s degree in theological studies.
“I am very grateful for the multitude of experiences that I have encountered here,” Barfield said. “I have gained professional experience as well as being able to build a vast network of friends and relationships through the opportunities provided to me at University of Mount Olive. University of Mount Olive has taught me four foreign languages, it has molded me into a much better writer, and it has given me field education as well. I have been a part of a holistic approach to education that has included every part of my person – mind, body, and spirit. That is what makes University of Mount Olive unique. I think it is truly amazing what this institution has allowed me to accomplish in such a short amount of time.”
