Chess Club Slides into a New Semester at UMO
MOUNT OLIVE- The University of Mount Olive (UMO) Chess Club is back in action and is looking for more participants this school year! The Chess Club participants are choosing their opening gambit in the ancient game of kings, queens, rooks, knights, bishops, and pawns every Friday at 2 PM in the Holmes and Lois Murphy Regional Center.
The UMO Chess Club lets students piece together the important elements of reasoning and critical thinking all while having fun with the game of chess. There are many players with a variety of experience, allowing for both competition and learning. The club hopes to host a UMO chess tournament and compete with other clubs in order to check out the local competition.
Chess Club president Jeffrey Yasalonis, a sophomore accounting and business management major from Yardley, PA, isn’t just participating in the club to pad his resume or to humor his professors. He said, “It is a lot of fun learning all the moves and playing one another. It is a great opportunity to get involved on campus and to be able to meet new people!”
Henry Singletary, instructor of accounting, is the club advisor. Singletary has been teaching chess for over 20 years, and some of his former students now compete in professional tournaments at the expert level.
If you’re interested in castling in with the Chess Club, please contact Jeff Yasalenis at jjy2323@umo.edu or Henry Singletary at hsingletary@umo.edu.
