Dreams Are Made For Everyone
WASHINGTON – Recent University of Mount Olive graduate Dorothy St. Clair knows a thing or two about taking care of children. St. Clair has three children of her own, five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Thanks to the degree she earned at University of Mount Olive, she now operates a child care center from her home. “I have always envisioned myself becoming a teacher. Dreams do come true.”
St. Clair’s dreams were almost dashed when she suffered a sudden stroke. The 61 year-old was paralyzed on the left side of her body from head-to-toe. After 11 months of recuperation, St. Clair was more determined than ever to finally get her bachelor’s degree. “I discovered University of Mount Olive in my hometown of Washington. They gave me the chance to connect my potential dream with reality.”
St. Clair initially struggled when she returned to college after her recovery. “It was challenging to get back on track with comprehension skills, typing and writing, but the teachers were wonderful with their assistance and patience.” Now, a part of MOC history, St. Clair thinks fondly on the time she spent as a student. “University of Mount Olive’s standards are of excellent quality, and gave me the skills and knowledge I needed. Classes were enjoyable, spontaneous and challenging.”
Although her deepest wishes have finally been fulfilled, the new MOC alumna intends on expanding her child care center in the years to come. “My dreams of a center are still in progress. My vision is to have a welcoming environment with bright colors. I want to provide preschool and after-school programs. I also want a playground designed with appropriate equipment for all ages.”
St. Clair is living proof that anyone with the audacity to hope, can achieve anything, if they’re willing to work hard. “University of Mount Olive transformed my life. I’m sure it can transform others. They made it possible for me to accomplish my goal. It is never too late to have a dream. No matter how old you are, dreams are made for everyone.”
