Greczyn to Talk on Leadership in Healthcare

MOUNT OLIVE – Robert J. Greczyn Jr., retired chief executive officer of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC), will be the guest lecturer at University of Mount Olive on September 12, 2013 at 2 p.m. in Southern Bank Auditorium. He will talk about leadership in healthcare as a team sport and share information on health reform.

Greczyn joined BCBSNC in 1998. He was named president in 1999, and became chief executive officer in April 2000. He helped move the company’s focus from “sickness insurance” to prevention. The healthy lifestyle choices program that he introduced provides financial incentives for people to adopt healthier behaviors.

During his tenure with BCBSNC, the company grew from about 1.5 million members to 3.7 million members, and revenue grew from 1.5 billion to more than 5.2 billion. He also helped create the BCBSNC Foundation, which has had a significant impact on North Carolina as well as University of Mount Olive.

Greczyn retired from BCBSNC in February 2010, and now serves on numerous corporate and community boards. He is a former chair of the ECU Board of Trustees, current chair of NC New Schools, and a member of the University of Mount Olive Foundation Board. He is also a member of the board at Vidant Medical Center.

Greczyn holds a BA in Psychology from ECU. He graduated with an MPH from UNC-Chapel Hill.
