MOC Prepares for the Start of a New Academic Year
MOUNT OLIVE – University of Mount Olive is preparing for a freshmen class of about 350 students with 215 of those being resident students. Freshmen move-in is scheduled for Saturday, August 17. Several churches, local businesses and alumni will be on hand to make the transition as smooth as possible.
According to Vice President for Enrollment Dr. Barbara Kornegay, the College is expecting a total of nearly 980 traditional students this fall which is an increase of about 60 daytime students over last year. “This year’s new students include a greater proportion of women. About 10% of our traditional student body is international, and quite a few are older (26 to 33 years of age) than we have seen in recent years. We think this is because more and more adult students want the total college experience,” Kornegay said.
As part of “Welcome Week” there will be activities and events planned to help students feel welcome, get them acclimated to college life and connect them with their fellow classmates. Students can participate in Trivia Night, a foam dance party, a cookout and a softball tournament with students competing against faculty and staff, to name a few.
“It’s a priority to have events that encourage students to truly enjoy their time spent at University of Mount Olive,” said Justin Roe, assistant director of Campus Life-Coordinator of Programs. “We want students to feel like University of Mount Olive is their home for the next four years of their lives. Having events on campus allows students to interact with other students, faculty, and staff. Getting involved and coming to campus events are great ways to make them feel more at home.”
An opening Convocation will take place on Saturday, August 17, at 7:30 PM. It will begin with a brief address by Dr. Kerstetter and conclude with a candlelight ceremony and singing of the University of Mount Olive Alma Mater.
