Handy Mart Invitational Brings in over $105,000 for Student Scholarships
MOUNT OLIVE – Approximately $105,000 was raised this year from the 25th Annual Handy Mart – University of Mount Olive Invitational Golf Tournament held at Southern Wayne Country Club. This year’s proceeds bring the total amount raised since the event began in 1987, to over $2.1 million dollars. To date, 535 scholarships have been provided to University of Mount Olive students from the annual Handy Mart golf tournaments.
“The Handy Mart Corporation, for more than 20 years, has hosted the Handy Mart-University of Mount Olive Golf Invitational to secure funding for University of Mount Olive students,” said Vice President for Institutional Advancement Kevin J. Jean. “The Pope Family has supported and collaborated in countless ways in terms of philanthropic giving, serving as executive members of the Trustee Board and participating as advisors in several capital campaigns. Once again, Handy Mart and EJ Pope and Son, Inc. are at the forefront in terms of leadership and transforming lives at University of Mount Olive.”
Winners of this year’s tournament were Jason Marlowe of Raleigh and Don Hill of Chapel Hill. They came from behind to capture the event shooting 59-58 = 117 to defeat Dane Jones and Jeremy Joyner by one shot.
“Over the years, University of Mount Olive has enjoyed tremendous support from many loyal sponsors,” said Judson Pope, President of EJ Pope and Son, Inc. doing business as Handy Mart and Pope Transport Co. “This year’s tournament continued that tradition. University of Mount Olive and the Pope family are truly grateful for all the sponsor monies and the time that the many volunteers commit to the event. Without both of these, the event would be impossible to run. Thank you for your continued support to the University of Mount Olive – Handy Mart Invitational.”
