Purdue Pharma Awards University of Mount Olive $15,000 for Summer Research Program
MOUNT OLIVE – University of Mount Olive has been awarded a $15,000 grant from Purdue Pharma. The money will be paid out in $5,000 increments over the next three years, and will provide financial support for biology, chemistry, and math majors involved in the summer undergraduate research program entitled Mount Olive Research Experience (MORE).
Dr. Robert Watson, assistant professor of Mathematics at University of Mount Olive, said, “This grant will provide the critical funding needed to get this program off the ground. It will fund the endeavors of its first students and help us grow MORE into a program that can serve the College and the region for years to come.”
According to Watson, undergraduate research has been identified as a beneficial experience for students. “In many cases, this experience cannot be obtained in a normal classroom setting,” he stated in the grant proposal. “Yet, of all the private liberal arts colleges in Eastern North Carolina, there are no such programs. University of Mount Olive is in a unique location to target a large number of students that are overlooked by many of the larger schools.”
The grant awarded funds will provide students participating in MORE with room and board, as well as a small stipend for miscellaneous expenses such as travel and supplies. The program is expected to start this summer on a small scale and grow over time.
